Anders Palmquist - SEK 1.1 million from the IngaBritt and Arne Lundberg Research Foundation



 I have received the grant for the project "Bone anchored amputation prosthesis: improved understanding of bone structure, dynamic and mechanical function in relation to the implant material." The grant will be used for a Raman microscope, says researcher Anders Palmquist, Department of Biomaterials.


Traditionally, biomaterials researchers primarily uses histological techniques to study tissue interaction of biomaterials. In my research I am developing correlative strategies to also quantify the ultrastructure and composition of the tissues formed in connection with biomaterials. The mechanical properties of the bone tissue is highly dependent on the nanoscale structure and composition, where the collagen and apatite arrangement is a measure of bone quality. With Raman spectroscopy, detailed molecular composition could be acquired adding complementary information to the structural analyses by electron microscopy.

Professor Christer Dahlin has been appointed as Ramfjord Visiting Professor at University of Michigan School of Dentistry (UMSD), Ann Arbor, USA.

Professor Christer Dahlin, Department of Biomaterials, Institute of Clinical Sciences, The Sahlgrenska Academy, has been appointed as Ramfjord Visiting Professor at University of Michigan School of Dentistry (UMSD), Ann Arbor, USA. He will spend time at the Giannobile Lab who focuses on developing techniques which will help clinicians to repair, reconstruct and regenerate craniofacial anomalies in patients. The lab has also been selected by the NIDCR to establish a center for tissue engineering. UMSD is ranked no 2 in the world with regard to scientific achievements within the field of Dentistry (University of Gothenburg is currently ranked 3rd). Professor Dahlin is a pioneer in the development of the concept of Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) which is a technique to regenerate bone in conjunction with dental implant treatment.


-It is really a great honor and I plan to spend some time there during the spring 2017 to conduct research but also to lecture. I see this as a beginning of a fruitful collaboration ship between our Departments long-term, says Christer Dahlin.

” A methodological platform to study molecular biocompatibility of biomaterials, Experimental and clinical studies”

Maria Lennerås successfully defended her PhD thesis on the 8th of Juni, 2016. The faculty opponent was Professor John Hunt, Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, University of Liverpool, UK. Supervisors were Dr Omar Omar, Mikael Kubista and Professor Peter Thomsen.

dentistry. Clinical studies."

Catharina Göthberg successfully defended her PhD thesis on the 4th of March, 2016. The faculty opponent was Professor Jan Eirik Ellingsen, Institute of Odontology, University of Oslo. Supervisors were Dr Omar Omar and Professor Peter Thomsen.

Dr Anders Palmquist receives prestigious award by the European Society for Biomaterials

Dr Anders Palmquist, Department of Biomaterials, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, is the recipient of the Jean Leray Award 2016. The Jean Leray Award is the most prestigious award given to young researchers by the European Society for Biomaterials. This award is established to recognize, encourage and stimulate outstanding research contributions to the field of biomaterials by young scientists.
