BIOMATCELL VINN Excellence Center of Biomaterials and Cell Therapy was founded by VINNOVA in 2007 as the national Center for the research and development of the next generations of biomaterial-based medical devices. The Center aims to contribute to the research and development of biomaterials intended for implantation and to the sustainable growth in the associated industrial and health care sectors. This is done by generating new knowledge, ideas, tools, and trained individuals in an interdisciplinary environment that integrates academic, clinical and industrial expertise.

In addition, BIOMATCELL is aiming to develop a focused research programme that combines scientific excellence with identified long term needs in the health care and industry sectors. The strategic process of selecting areas of research has been based on emerging patient and societal needs, Swedish biomaterials international research track record, emerging knowledge in cell and molecular biology, including stem cells, and industrial potential to achieve global leadership.
